Quick guide to storing fruit & vegetables
There are three main places to store fruit and vegetables: the refrigerator, the counter or a cool dry place.
If storing in a fridge in plastic bags, remember that food in bags increases the amount of humidity it is exposed to, and with it the greater likelihood of mould. Wash fruit and veg just before using them as moisture promotes mould.
Examples of items to store in refrigerator: cabbage, celery, grapes, mushrooms, sprouts, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, broccoli & carrots.
It helps if you allow some fruits to ripen before placing them into a refrigerator. For example: avocados, nectarines, peaches, plums, kiwi & pears.
Produce that's good for the counter top, out of sun, include: apples, bananas, tomatoes, cucumbers, grapefruit, lemons, oranges, peppers, watermelon & mangoes.
And lastly, storage in a cool dry place is good for produce such as: garlic, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes & shallots.
